UK energy assessment system will waste millions, according to AECB

The energy assessment system used by British housebuilders is inaccurate. And it will lead to UK developers spending at least half a billion pounds on microgenera-tion technologies rather than producing well designed and well insulated buildings.rnThat is the view of AECB, the sustainable building association.rnAccording to the organisation, the standard assessment procedure (SAP), which predicts the energy consumption of a building, overestimates a few areas of energy demand - and underestimates most of them.rnThe AECB fears inaccurate predictions will encourage UK builders to construct poorly designed buildings that do not reduce CO_2 emissions.rnThe association said: "As a result of SAP's inadequacies, to achieve the higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes,housebuilders are resorting to installing costly technologies such as photovoltaics, ground source heat pumps, solar panels, biomass boilers and wind turbines in order to meet the target."
