摘要

As we have already discussed in these pages, Copenhagen achieved little. But at least back in December there seemed to a general agreement that carbon emissions are responsible for heating up the planet and that we need to do something about it. Isn't it amazing how quickly things can change? With climate science under siege, a recent BBC poll reveals a dramatic drop in the number of people who believe that global warming is even happening, let alone that we are responsible for it. (This month's excellent cover story, on page 22, by eco-psychologist Sandra White may provide some answers to this emergence of denial). "The global warming movement as we have known it is dead," says the US commentator, Walter Russell Mead. He's not wrong. And with the carbon markets plummeting and Australia about to elect a man that describes climate change as "absolute crap", the short term does not look rosy.
