We are living in curious times. From the Tories working with the Lib Dems in a UK coalition government to die-hard environmentalists supporting a new generation of nuclear power plants, traditional political and social demarcation lines seem to be bending out of shape. In this context, perhaps it's not so surprising to hear that some of Europe's largest corporations, including Google, Marks & Spencer and Nike, recently issued a joint business declaration calling for the EU to cut emissions to 30% by 2020 from 1990 levels, raising it from the current 20% target, in the interests of strengthening Europe's economic future. Yes, that's right, these and 26 other companies actually want tougher environmental regulations.
