摘要

Although there have been extensive studies on combining cellular automata (CA) modelling and geographical information systems (GIS) in the last two decades, this is the first book that brings this stream of research to a new standard of operational research. This book follows the theoretical milestone of Fractal Cities (Batty and Longley, 1994) and then the path-breaking monograph of new-generation simulation models in Cities and Complexity (Batty, 2005) and is a good addition to this field of urban simulation. Yan Liu provides the most comprehensive review of CA development and its applications in a GIS environment. The presentation is lucid, accessible, and parsimonious. Even though it is technically sophisticated, there is no excessive use of jargon in the book and the argument is presented with excellent illustrations.
