Previous commentaries in Environment and Planning A (James et al, 2004) and Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers (Peck, 1999) have argued for the need for geography to expand its role in public policy and to become more politically engaged. While the British Labour government is actively seeking a closer relationship with social scientists in order to develop evidence-based policy, several commentators have lamented geography's failure to make effective policy interventions relative to other disciplines such as sociology (Martin, 2001).
