"Ima", my daughter calls, "Why doesn't this man let us in?" 1 look to see if this naive question posed by a three-year-old will bring some movement to the security guard's expressionless face. Nothing. "We have to wait until the person who invited us here lets us in", I explain to my daughter in an attempt to hide my own impatience. We have just arrived for a summer vacation in Israel a couple of days ago and already I can't stand the tiresome insistence on 'security'. How easy it is to forget these inconveniences when one lives elsewhere. At least we're not standing in the regular line, I think to myself, glancing at the people who are waiting to pay for this pleasure.
