Industry and environmentalists are ramping up their efforts to promote their competing policies for handling exports of discarded electronics, as EPA debates whether to revise its rules to address the issue and Congress may weigh in.rnThe intensified dispute even extends to to the words each group uses to describe the product at issue- with activists calling used electronics "e-waste" and industry calling the material "e-scrap."rnThe Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), an industry group, March 25 announced its new policy for handling electronics recycling, which supports exporting electronics for recycling only to facilities that meet a number of standards, including verifiable environmental, health and safety management systems; adequate records to show compliance with laws; and the capability to safely recycle electronics and dispose of hazardous waste.
