EPA Fights IG Claim Of Approving Improper Asbestos Demolition Methods

Epa is defending itself against new allegations by its Inspector General (IG) that EPA authorized controversial — and possibly illegal — demolition practices at some asbestos sites that might expose people to asbestos, with EPA saying it is already investigating the reports and that in some cases Superfund law may permit the methods. IG on Dec. 14 issued an "early warning report" on allegations that EPA may have authorized use of the so-called "wet method" of demolishing asbestos-contaminated buildings at various sites, including the Hanford Superfund Site near Richland, WA and a gaseous diffusion plant in Paducah, KY.
