State Agencies Seek Oversight Of Nuclear Waste Storage, Disposal

The Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) is urging EPA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to work more closely with states to bolster oversight of transportation, storage and disposal of nuclear waste. During ECOS' recent annual meeting here, the group - which represents many state environmental agencies -approved a resolution that "affirms that states are partners with all appropriate federal agencies" on handling nuclear waste, including EPA, NRC and DOE, "and should have a clear decision-making voice on activities proposed within their borders."
