EPA Seeks Six-Week Extension For Advocates' Ozone NAAQS Deadline

EPA is asking a federal district court to grant it a six week extension - from Dec. 1 to Jan. 15 next year - to environmentalists' suggested deadline for proposing revisions to its ozone air standard, citing a need for more time to review scientific data and potentially craft a novel "secondary" standard to protect the environment. The suggested timeline, outlined in a Feb. 25 agency filing with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, would also push issuance of final revised national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) to Nov. 15, 2015, compared to the Oct. 1, 2015, deadline that environmentalists are seeking. Advocates filed suit in Sierra Club, et al, v. EPA, et al. to force a review of the standard, and recently proposed that the court impose the Dec. 1 and Oct. 1, 2015, deadlines for the rule.
