Wirless networking technology is extremely convenient, particularly for engineers who work in temporary offices, on building sites or in the field. Rather than laying temporary cables (and risking an occupational health and safety issue when someone trips over them), wireless networking technologies based on the 802.11 standards (such as WiFi) allow engineers to deploy networks by simply plugging a wireless router into an existing network (or internet connection) and adding wireless network cards to PCs and notebooks to construct a network. Current wireless technologies based upon the 802.11g standard allow data transfer rates of up to 108Mb/s provided of course there is no RF interference or signal attenuation from metal buildings or insulation. The signal range is around 100m indoors (again subject to attenuation) and up to 400m outdoors, although with appropriate antennas, ranges of up to 1.5km are possible provided there is a clear signal path.
