Professional standards scheme - progress report

Following the call for expressions of interest from mem-bers wishing to join the professional standards scheme being developed by Engineers Australia, some 380 members have responded. This is short of the target of 1000 considered desirable to make the scheme viable. It appears that there is some confusion about for whom the scheme is intended. The scheme is intended initially for sole practitioners and owners/managers of small-medium firms offering engineering and engineering-related services in Australia. It is not intended for public sector employees. As members of the scheme have to be members of the occupational association, the scheme will initially only be able to accept applications from individuals. This is because Engineers Australia does not currently have a grade of membership for companies. However, we are exploring ways of covering medium to large companies within the scheme.
