Safeguarding Australia

Engineers Australia is midway through its two year project to enhance homeland security by building security into the nation's infrastructure, information technology and elements of the built environment. Called Engineering a Secure Australia, the program has been extremely successful, ensuring the potential of engineers is capitalised on by governments, industry and emergency services. The engineering profession has a great deal to offer in the four phases of security -prevention, preparation, response, re- covery and attribution (see table 1). Our views have been well received by government, industry and the media. Two small illustrations of the importance given to Engineers Australia is that we have been asked to serve on the board of the National Center for Security Standards and the commonwealth attorney-general's Built Environment Expert Advisory Group dealing with critical infrastructure protection.
