Treating odour at Subiaco

The lead article in this feature covers the upgrade and odour control system at the Subiaco wastewater treatment plant in Western Australia. This feature also looks at various other water treatment projects, new products, a plant upgrade at a chicken processing plant in New Zealand, and a microbial fuel cell that generates electricity while treating domestic wastewater. The Subiaco wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is one of three main treatment plants fox Perth. Treatment is carried out by a conventional activated sludge process with a capacity of 61.4ML/d. The plant incorporates an Inlet Works with two bar screens and grit removal, the wastewater then flows into four 20m-diameter circular primary sedimentation tanks, each fitted with a peripheral rake drive. The primary effluent is aerobically treated in nine aeration tanks, each with a volume of 1800m~3. Final clarification is carried out in 12 secondary sedimentation tanks, each with a diameter of 19m.
