British consultant speaks out on construction risk

When considering risk in engineering design or building projects, it fundamentally involves thinking about what can go wrong, according to Dr Allan Mann, the technical director of the British engineering consultancy Jacobs Babtie. Mann was one of the keynote speakers at Concrete 05, the Concrete Institute of Australia's biennial conference, held in Melbourne last October. In a paper, titled Risk and liability in structural engineering, Mann spoke mainly about risk in the UK construction industry. He is on the United Kingdom Standing Committee on Structural Safety and is contributing to a UK Institution of Structural Engineers booklet on risk which will be published later this year.
