As women are still rare in engineering management and leadership positions, they frequently attract attention firstly because of their gender and secondly because of their work and capabilities, often to the chagrin of those women themselves. Leeanne Bond, who at 40 has already held a number of senior positions within and outside her organisation, is no exception, although these days she feels more relaxed about it. When she became president of Engineers Australia's Queensland Division four years ago, she asked her executive director to introduce her at functions as the first chemical engineer, rather than the first woman, in that positon.
