Raising productivity through migration, innovation and infrastructure investment

Migration, particularly post-war migration, has been a key aspect of Australia's population growth and has contributed to a significant increase in the scale of the Australian economy. Historical benefits from migration are widely accepted among Australians, and have formally been demonstrated in a variety of studies. Research into the ageing of the population shows that the main vehicle to drive economic growth will need to be policies to raise productivity. Engineers Australia has recommended to the Productivity Commission study into the economic impacts of migration and population growth that two key options exist to achieve productivity growth. These are further enhancements to Australia's innovation policies and initiatives to overcome present underinvestment in infrastructure.
