Safety features for aircraft

Two Australian inventions are today integral parts of modern aircraft - the black box flight recorder and the escape raft/slide.rnIn 1956 David Warren at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory (ARL) in Melbourne (Department of Defence) invented a devicernthat every few seconds recorded cockpit noise and instrument readings during flight. The original device had eight instruments located within an asbestos lined box and recorded about four hours of data on a metal wire recorder. The original device or "memory unit" became successful after a couple of major aircraft accidents and a chance meeting in 1958 when a member of the UK Air Board visited the ARL.
