A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of a transcontinental train trip aboard the Indian-Pacific. I travelled Red Kangaroo sleeper. Such accommodation was in a 32-berth carriage which had a mass of about 40t.rnTaking the carriage alone, the vehicle mass to full passenger load was thus approximately 1.25t per passenger. When comparing heavy rail and buses, and given this high value of vehicle mass per passenger (even in this more extreme example), part of your article concerning energy efficiency of transport modes in the September issue did not surprise me ("Energy efficiency of transport modes revisited").
