Engineering our nation's capital

Engineers play an important role in creating nations, and in Australia engineers have contributed significantly to the establishment and development of our national capital. Some of the defining moments in the century of building Canberra were guided by engineers. Before the site or name of Canberra had been decided, engineers were influencing the national capital. Following Federation in 1901, engineers were progressively engaged to manage and advise on many aspects of the creation of a capital for this fledgling nation. Engineers were involved in the "Battle of the Sites", primarily between NSW and Victoria and later the "Battle of the Plans" between designers, politicians and public servants.
