Early in my working life as a shire engineer in far western Queensland, I was asked by a concerned committee about how best to preserve an historic decaying community hall. "I'd start with a match and begin again," was my ill-considered response. Unsurprisingly, I found it difficult to engage with this group from then on, such was their antipathy towards me.
