摘要

The federal government is still willing to pay an external engineering consultant up to $660,000 a year instead of having engineers on staff doing the same job for around $160,000 per annum or less. This revelation highlights a long term argument about the de-engineering of government over the last 20 years. The Canberra Times has reported on internal paperwork it obtained from the Department of Defence showing the federal bureaucracy's spending on external consultants. The high cost of the consultant, who has already been employed, was outlined in a Deloitte report for Defence to set up a new fuel services branch to deal with major problems in the fuel supply chain. Over the last seven years, public service spending on consultants has more than doubled, from $5.3 billion in 2007 to $11.1 billion in 2014.
