Web-based simulations for computer-assisted learning in the higher education sector

There are numerous initiatives for maximising benefits to teaching and learning in higher education using information technologies, especially those utilising the World Wide Web to provide a user-friendly, multimedia interface. The expanding population of students and increased demand for flexible education underline the need to take advantage of these technologies without incurring large overheads in terms of development and infrastructure. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the development of Web-based, interactive simulations, to evaluate the benefits based on user trials and to illustrate the potential for a widely accessible educational environment.
