Hydro-quebec is gearing up for con-struction of a $380-million hydroelectric complex on the Toulnustouc River in northeast Quebec. The project includes construction of a 71-meter-high dam, a 526-Mw, two-unit powerhouse and a 9.8-kilometer-long intake tunnel about 100 km nordieast of Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The tunnel, llm wide and 13 m high, will be driven through graphitic gneiss, reaching a maximum depth of 300 m about 1 km from the tunnel portal. About 1.1 million cu m of rock will be excavated from the tunnel and 500,000 cu m from the powerhouse site, says Clair H. Murdock, a Montreal-based tunneling consultant.
