DEMAND FOR DEWATERING TECHNOLOGY RISES AS WATERWAYS FILL UP

Dredgers eager to dig out the nation's mucked-up waterways are calling for advances in much-needed dewater-ing technology. The issue of how to dispose of slurry dredged from heavily silted and increasingly urbanized lakes, rivers and ports took center stage at the Western Dredging Association's annual meeting, June 24-27, in Houston. Land available for building settling ponds where dredged materials can naturally dry out is growing scarce. Increasingly restrictive permitting and added construction costs further detract from that option.
