Is it a boat, a plane, a bird? No—it's a museum that looks like all three. In giving multiple and complex personalities to the $75-million Milwaukee Art Museum addition, nearing completion on the Lake Michigan shore, architect-engineer Santiago Calatrava has taken the building team on a fantastic voyage. The building's entry pavilion—itself masquerading as a yacht—sports a skylight in the form of a billowing sail and a cable-stayed footbridge in the form of a gangway. It will soon get a giant sunscreen in the form of "flappable" wings.
