The controversial Boston Central Artery/Tunnel project has morphed into a public relations nightmare following a major tunnel leak last fall that has engineering consultants, Massachusetts politicians and the U.S. Justice Dept. at odds. Now, Congress will travel to Boston to hold hearings on the brouhaha. The latest controversy surrounds the departure of George Tamaro, managing partner of Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, New York City. The firm was hired last fall by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority to review and address technical issues concerning leaks in the Interstate 93 tunnel. His review and that of Jack K. Lemley, head of Boise-based Lemley & Associates Inc., followed the Sept. 15, 2004, blowout of a tunnel slury wall panel that flooded lanes.
