Happy 50th Anniversary To ENR's Top Lists

This year is the 50th anniversary of ENR's ranking of U.S. general contractors. Our first Top List in January 1958 ranked 62 firms that had new contract volume of $40 million or higher. In a pleasant coincidence, we share the anniversary with a product that gets kids interested in building things: This year is also the 50th birthday of the LEGO Brick-the popular toy made by the Danish company of the same name. To celebrate, ENR's art director, Guy Law-rerice, built the tableau you see on this week's cover out of LEGOs with his six-year-old son, Owen, and photographed it in his back -yard. The fa-ther-son con-struction team also built the cover tableau of a design firm's office for the April 21 Top 500 issue and plan a specialty contractor cover tor October. Lawrence had been thinking of "build- ing" these ENR covers for several years, and the two anniversaries made it the perfect time. The experience hasn't led Owen to construction as a career, however. He still wants to be a race-car driver.
