M&A NEWS FOR SPECIALTY CONTRACTORS

While the market outlook for specialty contractors will be challenging, we see strong mergers and acquisitions activity taking place for those firms with a differentiated market position or extraordinary customer value propositions. There are several trends driving consolidation: expansion by larger firms into specialized niche markets (e.g. industrial, petrochemical); owners' seeking additional capital to support growth; and a desire to gain liquidity. While M&A activity continues to increase, consider that less than 10% of all owners exit via a third-party sale. Most contractors conduct internal sales to employees and/or family members already involved in the business, or liquidate their businesses entirely.
