Design Issues Force Repairs To Big Alaska Air Base Hangars

Software problems appear to be at the core of design errors that have forced delays in construction of two huge hangars that are to house the U.S. Air Force's new C-17 transport aircraft at Elmendorf Air Force Base, near Anchorage. But facility engineer CH2M Hill Cos. says it will cover design-related repair costs. The design flaw was found last fall during steel erection for one hangar, a $29.2-million, 60,000-sq-ft facility with trusses reaching 210 ft long. The first of eight aircraft arrived at the base last June.
