Reinforcing Soil With Peat for Load Bearing in Finland

In southern Finland, land for residential areas is hard to find and is always very expensive. Generally, the soil layer down to about 7 ft is peat, underlain by soft clay. For those reasons, just a few miles away from Helsinki's city center, approximately 7.5 acres of soft soil is being stabilized for 25 lots. An area this big has never been stabilized for residential use in Finland. The soil reinforcement started in July 2011 and is expected to finish by April 2012.
