New Meramec River Bridge

The first phase of the 1-44 Meramec River Bridge replacement in Missouri requires a new bridge built between the existing east and west bridges that are now in use. Case Foundation Co. of Roselle, Ill., a deep foundations specialist, was hired as the drilling contractor for this project and reached out to Nucor Skyline as its steel foundation supplier. Because of some difficult loose sand and gravel conditions on top of the bedrock, Skyline manufactured the rolled and welded pipe piles to 66 in. OD × 0.5 in. in various lengths to minimize shaft cave in and stabilize the overburden of the soil conditions. Mild karst conditions, underground drainage systems that include sinkholes and caves, were also noted, causing the need for one of the shafts to be drilled deeper into the bedrock to create a seal. Another condition at the site was high water on the Meramec River due to local storms.
