My thoughts first turned to making my own scratch build locomotive around 2007, whist I was well on the way to finishing my Model Works A3 Dick Turpin. Some ideas were being formed based on a few things I had picked up from listening to friends in the club and the experience of driving many different types of miniature locomotives. After some thought, I was convinced that a number of basic ideas had became important to me. These had evolved over a few years since I became part of this wonderful hobby of miniature railways and model engineering. These were: Only 2 cylinders- on the outside, everything must be within easy access for maintenance, powerful (as I love passenger hauling), superheated and to use metric measurements and fasteners whereever practical, (especially cap screws where they are unseen).
