According to the Freedonia Group, domestic homeowner or consumer markets for air cleaners, grew 34% over a 5 year period to reach $395 million in 2004, and with continued growth are estimated to reach $515 million by 2008. For particulate removal, certain laboratory testing standards have been established, though the reported performance index for portable and induct air cleaners are different. The effectiveness of portable air cleaners is evaluated using the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) Standard AHAM-AC-2002 to report the clean air delivery rate (CADR) for cigarette smoke (0.10 -1.0μm size particles), fine dust (0.5 -3.0μm) and pollen (5 - 11μm).
