Eastman Kodak, a name rooted in photography, at one time ruled the world of film. Over 90 percent of film sold in the 1980s carried the Kodak brand. Virtually every family was in search of the perfect "Kodak moment." Sales were over $10 billion. One hundred and twenty thousand plus people were employed by Kodak - over 60,000 in Rochester, NY, alone. Employment was high and the Rochester economic climate flourished, with Kodak being the engine that drove the success of the region. The business picture began to fade rapidly for Kodak as a series of market disruptors ranging from digital cameras to smart phones rendered film obsolete. The decline proved to be quick and lethal. Today, fewer than 1,600 people in Rochester call Kodak their employer, The company is a shell of what it once was as it tries to reinvent itself in various business segments. Assets were sold along with valuable patents. One of their most valuable assets was the vast amount of land known as Kodak Park that the company owned and operated in their Rochester footprint (once the largest photographic product manufacturing facility in the world).
