Alaska District Takes Prominent Role in New Defense Strategy

With the nation's defense strategy focus shifting to the Asia-Pacific region, the expanding involvement of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District in that part of the world has taken on new and increasing importance. In partnership with agencies such as U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) and the U.S. State Department, the district has executed more than 200 projects and gained broad experience throughout the region. Work that started in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam has expanded to India, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan. In fiscal year 2013, the district's workload under the Department of Defense Humanitarian Assistance Program and U.S. Agency for International Development consisted of 70 projects valued at $31 million, while programs supporting the U.S. State Department for security assistance and foreign military sales featured three projects valued at $91 million.
