Using the Project Management Body of Knowledge to Enhance the Operations Process

Field Manual (FM) 1-02, Operational Terms and Graphics, defines a military operation as "A military action or the carrying out of a strategic, operational, tactical, service, training, or administrative military mission," and the operations process as the "activities performed during operations: plan, prepare, and execute with continuous assessment." Contrast these definitions with the Project Management Institute~® definition of a project as "a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result," and project management as the "application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements." A commander or staff officer may be led to believe that the operations process and project management are two separate approaches to the same idea. This belief, however, could limit their planning capabilities.
