On 29 October 2012, after causing many deaths and creating much destruction on its move northward during the preceding 7 days, Superstorm Sandy came ashore in New Jersey. Sandy caused levels of destruction not seen in recent memory and was eventually categorized as the largest Atlantic storm (based on storm diameter) in U.S. history. As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) district responsible for the majority of the New Jersey coast, the Philadelphia District responded to all requests by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide emergency public works and engineering support throughout New Jersey.
