Kinetics of swelling of Chinakuri coal in NMP, EDA, and NMP-EDA (1:1) (vol/vol) mixed solvent system were studied at temperatures ranging from 15 det.C to 60 deg.C. the results obtained indicated that the diffusion of NMP, EDA, and NMP+EDA (1:1) in coal was described by Fickian diffusion. The values of diffusion exponent "n" were closer to Fickian diffusion in most cases though in some cases the value of "n" was even as low as 0.3 the activation energies for the combined diffusion and swelling process were in the range 20-30 kJ/mol suggesting that the activation energy barrier may be associated with the disruption of hydrogen-bonding interactions in coal.
