Published on 4th April, this report concluded that in view of the uncertain nature of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)'s commercial income, its current funding model is unsustainable, and a new one is needed urgently. Chairman Peter Luff MP said: 'Having initially called the NDA in to question their request for a last-minute one-off extra payment of £400 million, we found that much of the difficulty was caused by the funding model itself. As the Trade and Industry Committee noted, the Government rejected the option of funding the NDA through a ring-fenced, segregated fund, under the control of the Authority. Instead it is funded essentially like other non-departmental public bodies. We believe nuclear decommissioning is too important to be left to the mercy of changing priorities in the Treasury and uncertain commercial income, and we urge the Government to begin work to resolve this issue urgently.'
