On the eve of his retirement from Parliament Paddy Tipping MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies from 1997 to 1999 and 2002 to 2010, and acting Chairman of the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, reflected on the issues needing urgent consideration by the next government.rnPerhaps the most pressing issue facing the energy sector is investment. Most of our traditional fossil fuel power plant is reaching the end of its natural life. By 2020 all the existing nuclear fleet save Sizewell will be decommissioned. There's an urgent need to bring on new renewables, both onshore and offshore wind, if we are to achieve the target of generating 30-40% of our electricity by renewables by 2020.
