摘要

The phytoplankton blooms in the tributary bays have become the most serious environmental problem in Three Gorge Reservoir (TGR), China. In order to understand the mechanism of those phytoplankton blooms, (1) the research work of eutrophication and its achievements in the TGR are listed, and (2) the factors to affect the eutrophication and Phytoplankton blooms are discussed. The results indicated that, in the TGR, the changed hydrodynamics caused by the TGD could be considered as the most important triggers to the phytoplankton blooms, especially the longer residence time, thermal density currents and stratification. To mechanically apply the empirical treatments in lakes to deal with the phytoplankton blooms in the TGR, in fact, is uneconomic and unrealistic. It is suggested to pay more attention to the special hydrodynamics and water level operation to control the phytoplankton blooms. Certainly, the future research should be carried out according to the peculiarities of the TGR.
