European Partners Join Forces to Create 'Smart Systems' Design with Integrated Methodology

A group of prominent semiconductor companies and universities have partnered in a new European research programme called 'SMArt systems Co-design' (SMAC). STMicroelectronics, Philips Medical Systems, ON Semiconductor and Agilent Technologies have been joined by a host of European universities and electronic design automation (EDA) industry partners in this three-year project with the goal to develop a leading-edge design and integration environment (the 'SMAC Platform') for the design of smart systems. Smart systems are intelligent, miniaturized devices that incorporate multiple functions such as sensing, actuation, computation, wireless connectivity and energy harvesting in a single tiny package and will be key components of next-generation applications in areas as diverse as energy saving, healthcare, automotive, factory automation and consumer devices.
