In mobile ad hoc networks, performance is degraded by link breakage due to node mobility and packet collision due to network congestion. Therefore, it is very attractive to investigate routing protocols which use a routing metric to discover long-lived routes or to disperse network congestion instead of using hopwise shortest routes. In this paper, we examine three route selection schemes in a routing protocol which uses the link expiration time as a routing criterion. Furthermore, we present the Busy Node Avoidance Routing (BNAR) protocol that employs a busy rate representing the nodal load as a new route selection metric. Computer simulation results show the fundamental performance and effectiveness of routes based on the link state and node state.
