If ever there was any doubt that the hacker underworld is in fact a social networking community, last month's H2K HOPE (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference in New York put the debate to rest. Last month, nearly 2,300 people paid $40 per person for the chance to gather at the Hotel Pennsylvania for three days of panel discussions, keynote speakers and general hacker-style merriment. According to H2K media coordinator Shana Skaletsky, the event was more successful than ever expected, prompting the rumor that another HOPE conference could be held sooner than on the traditional every-third-year schedule.
