Centralised Substation Automation System Using Information Technology-A Concept

Most current power system control and automation systems are based on the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) model. A central master station, located at the control center, gathers information from a number of remote terminal units (RTUs), which are based in the substations. While the SCADA model provides acceptable performance and reliability, it has a number of drawbacks, particularly in the areas of flexibility and open access to information.
