Commercial buildings are the construction industry's mainstay. Anyone who has come to the industry lately can verify that by looking at history: When office buildings were overbuilt in the last few years of the 1980s, construction went into a tailspin, from which it emerged only in 1993. It's a matter of fact: The construction industry's 1990-92 fall-off was worse than that in the national economy. (See Table 1 and Figure 1.)
