摘要

The late pope, John Paul Ⅱ, often said that one of his greatest dreams was to visit China. If his successor, Benedict XVI, achieves that goal, and with it an end to half a century of estrangement between China and the Vatican, he will find a country remarkably receptive to Christianity, in spite of the Communist government's deep suspicion of religion. But the Catholic church will have some catching up to do; it is Protestantism that in recent years has spread most rapidly in China, even among the usually sceptical urban elite.
