Although the misery in eastern Con-go is rarely out of the news, the complex recent history of the region is less easily grasped. Battered by vying armies, local militias and invading neighbours, looted for its mineral deposits and divided between rival ethnic groups, it is now vulnerable to a dissident Tutsi general, Laurent Nkunda, who has close links to Rwanda. He has backed away from recent threats to attack Goma, the main city in the east, where United Nations peacekeepers have their regional headquarters. But the lot of hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians remains desperate.
