Pat barker's 12 novels cover many subjects-from conflict in Afghanistan and Bosnia to working-class poverty in England. Yet she is best known for writing about the first world war. Her memorable "Regeneration" trilogy was based on the experience of two British war-poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, and the neurologist who treated them for shell-shock. Its final volume, "Ghost Road", won the 1995 Man Booker prize. Ms Barker returned to the war in 2007 with "Life Class", about a love triangle between three students at the Slade School of Art in London where they were taught by a real-life surgeon and artist, Henry Tonks. "Toby's Room", the new and hugely enjoyable sequel, crosses some of the same territory and timing, but it also stands alone as a work of fiction.
